BREAK THROUGH

Think about a situation or problem and hold it in your mind. Close your eyes for a moment and ask for insight. When you open your eyes again, let your gaze fall on one simple object. This will tell you something about the situation. See what insight you can discover in your environment when you open your eyes. (You can also practise this throughout your day. Just notice the first thing you see when this situation pops into your mind. What does it tell you?)

You Know More About Symbols Than You Think!

Symbols are far less enigmatic than many people realise. There are dozens of books about the meanings and origins of all kinds of symbols – dream symbols, religious symbols, historical symbols, all types of symbols. Fortunately, though, you probably already understand the images your intuition uses because it is yours. You can study these different types of symbols if you want to widen your understanding of the many interpretations they carry, but when you’re working with your intuition you must always ask yourself first, ‘What does this symbol mean to me?’

Usually, the answer you get will be obvious. Symbolic images are often quite literal. Stop signs mean stop. Babies mean babies. Coins mean money. And even nuns mean nuns! Yet symbols can be figurative, too. Babies can mean new life and rebirth. And coins can reflect investments, income and jobs as well (sources of income).

Even when images are metaphorical, you know more about them than you think. If you hear about a person who ‘sees the glass half-empty’ you know immediately that person has a pessimistic attitude. Symbols as metaphors are everywhere. They are used by everyone to communicate the many conditions of work, love and life that we all meet every single day.

She’s over the moon. Don’t rock the boat. Go for the gold! We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. He’s under the weather . . . over the hill . . . in hot water. You hear these statements (and dozens like them) many times over, and never once have you thought that boats, bridges, hills or water were actually involved. Nor did you think, ‘I don’t know what that means.’

Yet when we are first learning to work with our intuition, we are often very hesitant to trust what we already know about symbols. Because intuition is new to us, we might think the symbols will also be new (and some certainly may be). Or since we are moving into a deeper understanding of ourselves, we wonder if the symbols will carry deeper and more abstruse meanings (and, again, some of them probably will). But I think the main reason we are so tentative about the symbolic messages from the spirit is that intuition itself is such a subtle and tentative experience. Still, just because the actual ‘sensing’ of intuitive perceptions can feel very ambiguous at times, it doesn’t mean we have to fill the message with ambiguity. Whatever you live, learn, think and enjoy will bring you symbols.
